＋For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Circa 1920s Waterman #56 Black Chased Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Flexible Nib. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.
Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Cleaned and polished the outside of the cap and barrel with Mineral Oil. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new silicone sac. Hand polished the Nickel Clip Cap Clip, Lever Box Assembly along with the Waterman 14K #6 NIB. The hard rubber displays some overall light oxidation on the cap and barrel. The chasing is lighter on the barrel than the cap.
This fountain pen is made from black chased hard rubber. The barrel has a light imprint at the center that read, "PAT'D 1884 MAY 23 1899 WATERMAN'S IDEAL GLOBE LOGO FOUNTAIN PEN N.Y. U.S.A. & AUG 4, 1903 U.S.A". The butt end of the fountain pen has a very crisp 56 imprint. The cap is a screw-on type cap always securing tightly with a Nickel Plated IDEAL CLIP-CAP Clip. The barrel has the Nickel-plated Lever and Lever Box Assembly in excellent condition. There are no monograms or personalizations to either the cap or the barrel. There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber. This Waterman #56 measures 5 5/8" in length capped and 7 1/8" posted.
The NIB is an awesome flexible and smooth Waterman 14K #6 Nib. The actual tip of the Waterman 14K NIB measures .90mm with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a medium line measuring .82mm and flexes up to a triple broad stroke of 2.08mm with medium to firm pressure. The writing sample provided was done with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.
The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. I have tested the lever filling systems with water and works flawlessly and as it was originally intended to.
Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.
I would say this Waterman 56 is in Fine to Very Fine condition. The Nib is the standout here with it being very flexible and writes smoothly. The chasing is fair on the barrel which is light and good on the cap which displays crisper. The hard rubber coloring is black with some oxidation. A great collector grade Waterman that is ready to write or just add to your writing arsenal collection.
