+For your consideration, we are offering for sale this Very RARE Restored 1939 Streamlined Waterman 403 Hard Rubber Fountain Pen with Sterling Silver Basketweave Overlay. This fountain pen has been thoroughly taken apart, cleaned and put back together and now is in wonderful writing condition.
Ultrasonically cleaned the NIB, feed, and section. Hand cleaned the inside of the barrel and cap with mineral oil. Replaced the old rubber sac with a new rubber sac. Hand polished the Sterling Waterman Cap, Clip, Barrel, and Ideal Lever Box Assembly along with the Ideal 14K #2 NIB. The threads on the cap and barrel are excellent with the cap always securing tightly to the barrel. There are no monograms or personalizations on the barrel with the cartouche area being left untouched. There are no cracks, nicks or repairs to the hard rubber. The sterling overlay looks beautiful, with some very minor scratching that commensurates with less than the age of the pen. The Waterman 403 fountain pen and is very sought after by collectors and rare - this was Waterman's last run at trying to keep themselves relevant in the Pen world due to all the celluloid pens that other manufacturers were starting to use during the time. This Waterman 404 measures 5 1/8" in length capped and 6 5/8" posted. The lever and box assembly has been cleaned and oiled. It works flawlessly and smoothly.
This fountain pen is made from black hard rubber with Sterling Silver Overlay. The sterling silver overlay is known as a Basketweave pattern and this fountain pen is the Streamlined version. The hard rubber portion of the pen displays a deep black hard rubber color with no oxidation. The barrel end has a 403 imprint that can be seen easily with the naked eye. The Sterling Overlay cap and barrel is stamped with, WATERMAN'S MADE IN U.S.A. STERLING".
The Waterman NIB is a 14K #2 Flexible and Responsive Waterman NIB. It writes so smooth with fabulous flexibility. When measuring the actual tip of the 14K Ideal NIB, it measures at .86mm with digital calipers. When writing the sample in the listing images, the NIB writes with a fine line measuring roughly .57mm on the horizontal strokes in the writing sample and flexes up to triple broad stroke of approximately 1.97mm with medium to firm pressure, I didn't want to overextend the NIB's capabilities. The writing sample provided in the images was completed with the actual pen in the images that are listed for sale. I have tested the filling mechanism with water and fills wonderfully. The writing sample was used by dipping the NIB in Parker Quink Blue Ink.
Any specks of white in the images are from the cotton that I used to clean the barrel and cap.
This is a wonderful antique Waterman's 403 Fountain Pen that is in ready to write condition using the smooth flexible NIB. I would grade this Waterman 403 in excellent condition. A superb writing instrument to add to your writing arsenal collection!
